Our Philosophy

We believe learning should be fun. It shouldn't be a painstaking process. Many of us were raised to believe education means sitting in a chair and listening to boring lectures. Dr. Montessori debunked that myth. Her keen observations and insights changed the way we view education today. She believed children have an innate desire to learn. They're born curious and hungry. Our job is to facilitate that hunger by providing a supportive and enriching environment. As Dr. Montessori once said, "If help and salvation are to come, it is through the child; for the child is the constructor of man."

Montessori Academy’s Early Years Learning Program applies the Montessori way of teaching to help children achieve their full potential. By valuing each child as an individual, we empower our students to become confident, independent learners.

What is the Montessori Method?

Maria Montessori developed the Montessori Method of learning during the late 1800’s in Italy. Her goal was to establish a natural learning experience for children. Through her observations she developed a “prepared environment” and designed a multitude of hands on materials, which helped develop order, concentration, control and independence. Additionally, children developed traditional and non-traditional academic and social skills.

Through many years of observing children, Dr. Montessori developed core principles that have become teaching staples around the world. They include materials that reflect five key areas: Practical Life, Sensorial, Mathematics, Language, and Culture. Classrooms are designed for children to have easy access to all these areas. Teachers merely demonstrate the proper use of these materials while children observe and attempt to do them at their own pace.

The teacher’s role is to prepare the classroom, observe, and guide their child. As a result, children progress at their own pace, according to their own abilities. Through work in the Montessori environment, children learn to develop concentration, self-discipline, and a love of learning.

Why Choose the Montessori Academy Learning Centre of Cambridge?

Parents frequently ask “Why Montessori?” as they seek options for their little ones. The answer is in the teachings of Dr. Maria Montessori. Her observations led her to believe that children have an innate desire to learn. She famously said, “We discovered that education is not something which the teacher does, but that it is a natural process which develops spontaneously in the human being.” The teacher’s role is to facilitate this learning process by creating an environment that allows children to explore and learn at their own pace.

Montessori Schools emphasize an important distinction between work time and play time. Children are taught that work time involves the use of materials and toys are to be avoided. The opposite is taught for playtime. A Montessori School is also distinct in the use of active learning rather than passive learning. The goal of any Montessori Environment is for a child to become an independent learner. The materials provide a means by which children can learn through their senses.

The child becomes the center of education. Materials such as sand numbers, and colored Easter Eggs help develop their fine motor skills. The well structured Montessori Environment provides a place where learning is fun and natural. This environment allows children to create their own path in the learning process that is unique to their developmental stage and individual capabilities. This element of self-directed learning is a key component of the Montessori Philosophy.
